Western Governors University is a fully online school with a unique approach to education and credit. Western Governors’ business degrees are offered at the bachelor’s and master’s levels. Western Governors provides online business degrees in a competency-based format, meaning students get career-relevant course work that can be completed at any pace. Students can spend as much or as little time on a course as they’d like; once they pass the final class examination, they can move on.
Western Governors University was founded in 1995 by the Western Governors Association. It was chartered in 1996, incorporated as a private, nonprofit university in 1997 and began accepting students in 1999. It has since expanded and is now supported by 19 governors. More than 30,000 students in all 50 states are currently enrolled in one of WGU’s online degree programs.
Western Governors University is nationally accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council and regionally accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.
The WGU business curriculum allows students to earn an online business degree in a variety of specializations at the bachelor’s and master’s levels.
Bachelor of Science: WGU’s business bachelor’s degrees provide fundamental skills and knowledge for performance and advancement in the corporate world. WGU offers six Bachelor of Science degrees in business: business management, human resource management, information technology management, sales and sales management, marketing management and accounting.
MBA: Western Governors offers three online master’s degree programs in business: general business, information technology management and health care management.
Students seeking admission to one of WGU’s online business undergraduate degree programs should take the following steps:
- Have earned a high school diploma or GED
- Be at least 16 years old
- Apply for admission
- Submit official transcripts of all prior academic postsecondary work
- Interview with a WGU enrollment counselor to determine “fit” with WGU’s goals
Students seeking admission into WGU’s online MBA programs should complete the following steps:
- Comply with all general admission steps listed above
- Submit a transcript verifying receipt of a bachelor’s degree from a recognized accredited institution
- Submit a resume showing at least three years of significant experience in business, industry or nonprofit work
