IBM Reports IT Skill Shortage –

With the rapid rate in which technology is growing and changing, the business workforce needs employees skilled in IT in order to stay at the forefront of technology trends and give their companies strategic advantages.

The problem is that companies today are experiencing skill shortages in IT as well as security concerns, according to the 2012 IBM Tech Trends Report released Dec. 5. The report, which surveyed more than 1,200 IT and business decision makers, found that just one in 10 organizations reported that they have all the IT skills—mobile technology, business analytics, cloud computing, and social business—needed to be successful. Within each skill area, about 25% report major skill gaps. Additionally, nearly half of educators and students indicated there are major gaps in their institution’s ability to meet the skill needs of the IT workforce.

With the move to more mobile technology, the report references security concerns as not just a technological concern, but as a “broad business issue with far-reaching policy and process implications.” For example, with social business, companies have to consider issues such as customer privacy, regulatory compliance, and employee guidelines on confidentiality, acceptable use, and protecting the corporate brand.

In an effort to address the skill shortages, IBM has announced it will offer programs and resources for students and IT professionals to acquire competitive technology skills for future jobs.

Through the IBM Academic Initiative, students and other professionals will have access to curriculum and training resources in the areas for which there is a high demand, such as cyber security and the areas of big data and analytics, commerce and mobile computing. All of the resources are available free of charge.

In addition to the new training courses, the academic initiative includes new curriculum, technology, and training for faculty, and various programs to engage new students.
