The Pennsylvania (AFL-CIO) Scholarship –

Students can now enter the scholarship essay contest by The Pennsylvania American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (PA AFL-CIO) for 2013.

The purpose of the essay contest is for students to learn more about the importance of organized labor. Scholarships—$500, $1,000, and $2,000—are offered to students in three categories: graduating high school seniors, all post-secondary students, and affiliate union members attending accredited institutions.

Applicants are required to write a minimum 1,500 word essay on one of the following topics:

  • Graduating High School Seniors: “What Makes Unions Appealing To Young Workers?”
  • All Post-Secondary Students: “How Does the Decline of Union Membership Affect Workers’ Rights?”
  • Affiliated Union Members Attending Accredited Institutions: “How Does the Labor Movement Appeal to Younger Workers in Today’s Economy?”

Application entries must be postmarked by Jan. 31, 2013.
