Portmont Increases Associates Availablity –

With the help of a $3 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, MyCollege Foundation, a nonprofit organization, has partnered with not-for-profit Portmont College at Mount St. Mary’s to begin offering online associate degrees to students of all academic and financial backgrounds.

Portmont founder and president Srikant Vasan created the school for students who will be considered based more on their “grit and character” than grades and test scores. The online school will offer four associate degrees: computer science, pre-health science, liberal arts, and business administration.

Each program begins with a launch pad course, followed by an in-person, one-week orientation course in which students meet a cohort of their peers. The remainder of the program includes accelerated online courses in eight-week terms.

Graduates of Portmont will have the option of moving on to a four-year school to earn advanced degrees or enter the workforce with knowledge and skills in problem-solving, working in teams, and effective communication.

The school will begin its first academic semester March 4, 2013.

Mount St. Mary’s College is a private, Catholic college for women located in Los Angeles. Portmont College is regionally accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
