Careers in Hospitality Management

Hospitality management is the study of “hospitality” – the relationships and services between hosts and guests. In other words, those who are interested in managing hotels, resorts, country clubs or restaurants for example pursue this online college degree. A hospitality manager’s main responsibility is ensuring that guests and visitors are accommodated and entertained and that the establishment’s operations, including a steady flow of income, runs smoothly.

Employment opportunities will vary depending on what particular direction you choose to pursues – restaurant or lodging services for example – but are expected to remain steady. Some will be more difficult than others. For example, opportunities for food service managers might decline by 3% while lodging managers might possibly grow by 8% throughout 2020, the U.S. Bureau of Labor of Statistics (BLS) predicts. Salaries will vary depending on level of education, prior experience and location, but entry-level managers in this field can earn anywhere from $32,000 to $50,000 a year, the BLS reported.

Required Education for Hospitality Management

An online bachelor’s degree in hospitality management is generally all that is needed to have a successful career in this industry. But since the industry can be highly competitive, an online master’s degree in hospitality management might help increase employment opportunities. While hospitality managers must know how to be personable and friendly so they can attract guests, they must also be very business-oriented. Thus, undergraduates must take a plethora of online business courses such as accounting, finance, human resource management, marketing, public relations, and of course, communications.

Once a student decides his or her concentration – food preparation, lodging operations or global tourism, for example – then he or she will start taking courses that pertain to that particular specialization. Internships are generally not required, but highly encouraged so students can obtain as much hands-on experience as possible.
