7 Ways to Boost Your Resume Without Lying

A good resume goes a long way with potential employers, and you only have a few seconds to make a first impression with your document.   1. Pass the glance test.


    Don’t have a long work history? Make your resume beautiful. Certain types of resumes are more commonly selected for review by hiring managers, often because they are supremely readable and easy to understand. Your resume is your first impression on a hiring manager — make sure yours is organized, neat, and showcases your best self.

  2. Add a “Skills” section.


    If you’re low on experience, beef up your skills section. Resume pros probably won’t need this section, but job-seeking newbies should try this quick boost. List some of the skills you have that should increase your chances of employment: Computer skills, management training, and any certifications you have should increase your perceived employability to a resume reader.

  3. Add an “Objective” section.


    Although this is ill-advised once you have more than a few job positions on your resume, if you’re just starting out in the professional world, a job objective section on your resume could be beneficial. This section can help fill white space, as well as let employers know what type of position you’d like within their company.

    Is your lackluster resume keeping you from getting a job? Try securing an internship to add an experiential line to your page. While paid internships are preferable, even an unpaid position shows initiative. If your focus is on getting a certain job, do everything you can to boost your hiring power.

    Maybe you’ve only had two jobs, ever. Including a recommendation with your short resume packet could be a good step to showcasing your talents to prospective employers. While a bit unconventional, if you’ve knocked the top off of a previous position, and don’t have much else to brag about, a recommendation could help identify you as a valuable asset to a future employer.

  6. Go electronic.


    Resumes can help you find a job, but a LinkedIn profile is like an instant resume booster — it makes your professional profile available to the world, whether you’re putting it in front of their eyes or not. Take on some web projects or freelance work to make your resume linkable to an online portfolio. If that’s not possible due to the nature of your training, make sure you’ve got plenty of endorsements and information on LinkedIn.

  7. Get creative.


    If there’s not much on your resume, get creative with its design. Are you an artisan of some sort? Have an online portfolio. Making it easy to see where your talents lie is the key to a great resume, and talented people should use every opportunity to showcase their gifts. Maybe you’ve only been in the workforce for a few months or years, but a resume with some “wow” factor could offset your inexperience.
