Survey: Military Vets Highly Marketable – OnlineBusinessDegree.org
A majority of employers would likely hire a military veteran over another equally qualified candidate, according to a new study by CareerBuilder.
The survey found that 65% of employers would most likely hire a military vet. Additionally, 29% of employers said they are actively recruiting veterans to work for their organizations—up 9 percentage points from one year ago. Twenty-two percent plan to hire members of the National Guard, up 8 percentage points from one year ago.
The survey notes that employers face a challenge when recruiting military veterans: vets not marketing themselves to their full potential. Forty-five percent of employers revealed that they pay more attention to applications submitted by U.S. veterans. However, 30% of employers say it’s not always obvious whether or not a candidate is a veteran.
There seem to be several job opportunities for veterans in the field of information technology. The most common areas for hiring U.S. military vets are:
- Information Technology: 30%
- Customer Service: 23%
- Engineering: 22%
- Sales: 20%
- Manufacturing: 20%
- Business Development: 15%
The online survey polled 2,655 U.S. hiring managers and human resource professionals between Aug. 13 and Sept. 6, 2012.
