Student Spotlight: Dawn Biggs, Kaplan – OnlineBusinessDegree.org

Dawn Biggs, 44, began Kaplan University in October 2011. The married mother of five children has an associate degree in veterinary technology and is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Accounting through Kaplan University.

What made you choose this particular school?

Biggs: “I chose Kaplan because of the interactive seminars and its reputation of being a good school. I love Kaplan and its instructors for being so helpful and caring.”

How did you decide on your field of study?

Biggs: “I chose Kaplan’s Accounting program, because I have always been good with numbers. Numbers make sense to me, because there’s always a right answer. Also, I have always dreamed of having my own business in tax preparation and bookkeeping, and now this degree will boost that dream into reality.”

What made you choose online education?

Biggs: “I like online learning because, other than seminar, I work at my own pace with deadlines to meet.”

How do you balance your course load with your other obligations?

Biggs: “I recently applied to H&R Block for employment. I have been taking an additional class at H&R Block in Income Tax preparation and look forward to learning the business. I sometimes have to get up at 5 a.m. just to fit my schedule into a day. A lot of times I don’t stop studying until midnight, and then I’m back up at 5 a.m. to do it all over again.”

Tell me about your online peer group.

Biggs: “In Federal Tax class, I had a team project and all of my classmates were very cooperative and helpful.”

What do you hope to do with your degree upon completion?

Biggs: “My husband—who is my greatest supporter—and I hope to have our own tax preparation and bookkeeping business within the next 5 years.”

What advice would you offer other students who might be considering online education?

Biggs: “You have to be committed to your education plans. If you are fully committed and can do the work on a deadline, you will succeed in online classes at Kaplan.”
