Business Term to Know: SIC
The SIC stands for the Standard Industrial Classification. It was established by the U.S. government in 1937 to create four-digit classifications of industrial products such as gold and silver ores (1040), operative builders (1531), and mobile homes (2451). The four-digit codes were replaced by six-digit codes in 1997, but several government agencies still use the former, including the Securities and Exchange Commission.
