A degree in human resources can be advantageous for graduates because it gives them an opportunity to work for a variety of employers. People with this degree can become human resources generalists or specialists.
Human resources specialists are an integral part of every business, as they are responsible for tasks such as hiring and training new employees, as well as payroll and benefits. Human resource specialists are expected to experience 21% growth by the year 2020, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and most of these positions require a bachelor’s degree.
The availability of jobs in human resources is one of the reasons Dane’le Thompson, 27, chose to pursue her Bachelor of Business Management with a concentration in human resources. After she graduated, it took just a month for her to land her first job in the field.
“My degree helped me in obtaining my current job in human resources, along with my military background,” said Thompson, who works as a human resources specialist for the Department of Veteran Affairs. “I had both the educational requirements and work experience.”
Thompson said her course work in school prepared her for many of the duties she performs at her job now, which includes hiring and promotions, resignations and terminations, as well as posting job vacancies.
“There are always jobs in human resources,” she said. “Just about every company, whether big or small, has a human resources department. There will always be a need.”
Here are a few schools who offer online bachelor’s degrees in human resources:
Students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Management of Human Resources degree from private, not-for-profit Bellevue University will experience curriculum that includes four core courses and four courses in the particular field of study. Classes include foundations of fiscal management; global business management; training, development, and employee relations; and compensation and benefit administration. Bellevue is based in Nebraska and regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
Illinois-based Benedictine University offers its students a Bachelor of Arts in Business Management with a concentration in human resources management. The 120-credit program requires completion of 42 general education credits, 45 program-specific credits, and 33 elective credits. The human resources management concentration focuses on employee recruitment strategies, employee performance and appraisal management, essentials of compensation and benefits, and employment law and risk management. Benedictine University is a not-for-profit school regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
Harrison College, accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS), offers a 180-credit Bachelor of Science in Human Resources. Students pursuing this degree program will take professional courses which include business statistics, employee benefits, risk management, and organizational behavior. Harrison is based in Indiana. Formerly Indiana Business College, the school began its online course offerings in 2004 – with a majority of them in the field of business.
Kansas-based Ottawa University is a private, not-for-profit school offering students a Bachelor of Arts in Human Resources. Required courses in this major include employment law and policies, human resources administration, employment and staffing, compensation and benefits, and training and development. Ottawa University is regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
Virginia College has campuses in 11 U.S. states as well as online. Students pursuing a human resources management degree, designed to take 47 months for completion, must graduate with 188 quarter credit hours. Human resource management courses will include staffing organizations, diversity in the workplace, legal environment in business, and labor and management relations. Virginia College is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS).
